Welcome to July, Dear Readers. Roald Dahl once said he’d like to do away with January in exchange for an extra July. Obviously Roald Dahl never lived in southern Arizona. As I type this, at 2:00 p.m. July 2, the thermometer on my back porch reads 112º F. The forecast for today is 114º, and 115º tomorrow. June was rather mild for this part of the country, so I was hopeful. Apparently I was also deluded, for as everyone knows, this is the price we pay for our gorgeous winters.
Anyway… I don’t go outside much when it’s like this, which is helpful for my writing schedule. I’m about 100 pages into my latest manuscript, something so different from anything I’ve done in the past 20 years that I’m having to stop frequently to do research. But as anyone who’s ever tried to write a book knows, we plug on.
Nearly half a century ago, my husband and I returned from a year in Europe on a Polish ocean liner. We left from Tilbury England on June 26 and sailed up the St. Lawrence seaway in Canada on July 1, Canada Day, and were welcomed home with loads of fireworks. We stayed in Montreal for a few days and crossed back into the United States on July 4. It was a great way to return to the Western hemisphere.
Speaking of Canada, don’t miss my Tell Me Your Story guest right here beginning on July 20, the inimitable Vicki Delany, (http://vickidelany.com/) one of Canada’s most prolific and varied crime writers and a national bestseller in the U.S. She has written fifty (!) books: clever cozies to Gothic thrillers to gritty police procedurals, to historical fiction and novellas for adult literacy. She is currently writing five cozy mystery series: the Tea by the Sea, the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop series, the Catskill Resort mysteries, the Year Round Christmas series, and the Lighthouse Library series (as Eva Gates). Vicki is a past president of the Crime Writers of Canada and co-founder and organizer of the Women Killing It Crime Writing Festival.
I love Vicki, and you will too.
